WHY BUGS AND BUTTERFLIES PHOTOGRAPHY?
- THE ARTISTIC ASPECT: How much will these portraits mean to you in 10 years? How much time and money will you invest in obtaining them? Families are incredibly busy these days, so when you make it a priority to capture this time in your life, you should be rewarded with images that move you emotionally. You should choose a photographer who is going to be able to provide you with images you consider priceless because they convey something that words cannot. My goal is to capture more than just what your child looks like, it is to reveal what you love most about them today.
- THE QUALITY ASPECT: I believe my clients should have stunning finished portraits that warm their homes and enhance their decor. To ensure I am able to deliver the highest quality products available, I travel to out of state photography conferences and trade shows regularly seeking unique items I feel will showcase your images beautifully. to My goal is for you to be thrilled with the images we create. Your creation fee includes a complimentary session consultation before our session takes place to help plan the details and understand what is most important to you that I capture during our time together. The consultation typically takes place in person at the studio, but can also be done via phone during the booking process.
- THE SPECIALTY ASPECT: Rather than being a jack of all trades, I chose to specialize in photographing babies, children, expectant mothers and families. Even though I have been a professional photographer since 2005, I continue to invest in learning the art of photography through training and seminars taught by professionals from all over the world. I am experienced in working with children of all ages, varying personality types and those with special needs. I believe every child I’ve photographed is beautiful and unique. I am excited about the possibility of photographing the members of your family.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO PHOTOGRAPH MY NEW BABY?
If you have a newborn, the ideal time to photograph them is within 10 days of their birth, ideally between days 5 and 8. Once newborns are 10 days or older, “artistic” newborn baby images are harder to achieve as they sleep less and can become fussy when placed on their tummies or in other poses. Newborn babies should be photographed while sleeping because they are peaceful in appearance. While awake, their movements often look awkward and uncomfortable in still images. Virtually all of the newborn babies you see on my web site were between 5 and 8 days old when photographed.
WHAT OTHER AGES ARE BEST TO PHOTOGRAPH?
Any time is a good time to photograph your child (or children). However, during the first year, once the baby can sit up but before they can crawl is a great time to capture. This is generally between 6 and 9 months for most babies. By this time, they have developed great little personalities and I feel that some of my most artistic and creative images come from these sessions. You may notice quite a few babies at this stage in my portfolio of images. I also love to photograph babies at this milestone because it’s a developmental timeframe that most parents recall very fondly. Once babies start crawling, they start to lose their chubby ‘baby’ physiques. Another great time during the first year is right around the baby’s first birthday. We can commemorate your baby's birthday with individual portraits and a "cake smash" at the end. After babies turn 1 year old, any time during the year is a good time to choose for a session.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO DO MATERNITY PORTRAITS?
Usually between 32 and 36 weeks, but it depends on the mother and her health and comfort level as she approaches the due date. Occasionally, it is better to take them earlier.
WHAT STYLE AND KIND OF CLOTHING SHOULD WE WEAR?
Each session and family are different, and I will provide specific clothing recommendations and guidance during the planning stage of your session. I am asked quite a bit about the hats, clothing and props shown in the images in my portfolio. The vast majority of those are items I purchased for studio use and my clients enjoy selecting, accessorizing, and customizing their sessions using these items. Many of them are one-of-a-kind antiques and hand made items designed especially for my backgrounds and photographic style. Even though I often choose to use props, I still try to keep the final images clean and uncluttered looking so that the focus remains on your child. The use of these unique props and how I use them in the images are one of the reasons my portraits are unique and different from those offered at other local photography studios.
ARE DIGITAL IMAGES AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE?
Yes, they are. Please mention your interest in digital images during our initial conversation if you think you may want to purchase them.
WHEN WILL I RECEIVE MY PORTRAITS?
For those who complete a Signature Session, we will set up an ordering appointment for you to view and order your portraits approximately 2 – 3 weeks after your session. Orders typically take four to six weeks to arrive. Orders containing specialty items such as Butterfly Books and Butterfly Boxes may take longer.
HOW FAR IN ADVANCE DO I NEED TO BOOK MY SESSION?
It depends on the month, but I am usually booked 2-4 weeks out. Therefore, it is best to contact me as soon as you know you’d like to have a session.
